The Masked Bobwhite and the Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken are two of North America’s most critically-endangered bird species.
The Masked Bobwhite, a subspecies of the Northern Bobwhite Quail, is currently found only in semi-desert regions of Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. Severe livestock grazing in Masked Bobwhite habitats contributed to the initial decline of this species.
The Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken once lived in grasslands along the Gulf Coast, but population levels declined drastically as habitats were destroyed by farming and industrial expansion. The most recent population estimate suggests that less than 200 of these birds exist in the wild today.
The Sutton Center takes a direct approach to preserving these two bird species through its captive breeding programs. The Attwater’s Prairie-Chicken and Masked Bobwhite are bred at the Sutton Center’s facilities, and later released in order to boost populations in the wild to self-sustaining levels.
Wildlife conservation cannot be put off until tomorrow. Immediate, collaborative action must be taken in order to save these endangered birds from extinction. Please join with us to protect our natural heritage and preserve these species for generations to come. Your monthly or annual contribution will support the Sutton Center’s efforts to conserve wildlife through education, research, and captive breeding. Become a member today and help make a difference in the fight against extinction.
