Swainson's Warbler Ecology in Oklahoma

A drawing of a Swainson's Warbler

In conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Sutton Avian Research Center is supporting a study on the status and ecology of Swainson's Warbler in McCurtain County, Oklahoma. The warbler now only occurs in the far southeastern tip of the state, although it was once much more widespread, with records of nesting even from northern Washington County, not too far from the Center.

A map of the Swainson's Warbler habitat

The Swainson's Warbler surveys are being primarily conducted on Little River National Wildlife Refuge, near Broken Bow, Oklahoma. The work was begun in spring of 1998, and 46 warblers were recorded. Four warblers were netted and color-banded. Vegetation characteristics were measured in the areas where the warblers were found.

Ongoing efforts are being made to locate nests and determine nesting success, determine territory size, characterize the habitats the birds are using, and determine dates of arrival and departure for this migratory species.
